The Personhood Bill (SB 1433) in Oklahoma claims that “the life of each human being begins at conception” and that based on this every “unborn child at every stage of development” would have “all the rights, privileges, and immunities available to other persons, citizens, and residents of this state.” If this bill makes its way through the Oklahoma legislature and ultimately becomes law, the consequences (both intended and unintended) will be catastrophic. Doctors would not be able to offer in vitro fertilization for families hoping to have children; families not hoping to have children would have limited birth control options, and life-threatening pregnancies would be forcefully carried to term or worse.
